Lapland Weather Month By Month
People always underestimate how much the weather shapes a Lapland trip. Here's what I tell friends planning their first visit.
Winter (December – March)
- December: -5 to -20 °C, snow guaranteed, only 2 hours of twilight.
- January: Coldest month, often -20 to -30 °C. Dry cold, very manageable with layers.
- February: Still cold but daylight returns fast — gaining ~7 minutes per day.
- March: -5 to -15 °C, long bright days, perfect for skiing and aurora.
Spring (April – May)
- April: Snow melts slowly. Days are long. Some tour operators close.
- May: Mud season. Locals call it kelirikko. I'd skip it unless you love quiet.
Summer (June – August)
- June: Midnight sun arrives. 20+ °C days are possible.
- July: Warmest month, 15–25 °C, lakes warm enough to swim.
- August: Berry and mushroom season. Cool nights, aurora returns late in the month.
Autumn (September – November)
- September: Ruska — the autumn colours. Possibly the most beautiful month.
- October: First snow usually mid-month.
- November: Polar night begins. Magical but dim.
Quick tips
- There's no bad weather, only bad clothes. Layers matter more than thickness.
- Check yr.no for the best Nordic forecasts.
- Snow tyres are mandatory Dec 1 – Feb 28 if you rent a car.
